Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has agreed in principle to allow a submarine tour in Nha Trang Bay in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

The tour will be trialed for two years by Vinpearl Jsc, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s largest listed company Vingroup, but it has not said when it would start offering it.

Phuc said absolute safety must be ensured for tourists and measures should be taken to protect the environment and to protect and revive ecosystems in Nha Trang Bay, widely considered among the world's most beautiful.

Vinpearl, which sought permission to offer tours around Hon Tre Island in the bay, is expected to use Deepview 24, a submarine made by the U.S.’s Triton Submarines Company. The submarine can carry up to 24 people and dive to a maximum depth of 100 meters, offering occupants a view of the undersea world.

Nha Trang Bay in the central province of Khanh Hoa is well known worldwide for its beaches and related attractions including scuba diving.

Khanh Hoa received 986,000 visitors between January and September, down 80 percent over the same period last year, according to the province's Tourism Department. The province's tourism revenues fell 76 percent in the period given Covid-19 impacts, it added.
