Da Nang, a famous beach city in central Vietnam, plans to build a nine-hectare central square besides its iconic Han River in Hai Chau District.

Under a newly-amended master plan for Da Nang until 2030 with a vision to 2045, the central square would be built in an area home to Dien Hai Citadel - a national relic site which reflects the country's fight against French colonists, Da Nang administrative center along with a history museum and marina.

As planned, the square would border Bach Dang, Tran Phu, Quang Trung and Ly Tu Trong streets. Once complete, it would become a symbolic public space for local dwellers and an urban showcase of Da Nang's identity.

Dien Hai Citadel was first built as a military outpost during the Nguyen Dynasty's (1802–1945) King Gia Long reign near the mouth of Han River to control access to Da Nang Port and serve as an important defensive position. It was first restored in 2018, one year after it was recognized as a national relic.

Architect Phung Phu Phong, deputy director of the city's Department of Construction, said the planning area of the central square has many advantages as most of the area comprises public land with no problems related to clearance or compensation.

He said although the area of the central square is not too large, it holds historical and cultural values.

In future, Bach Dang Street would become a pedestrian zone along Han River, stretching from the foot of Tran Thi Ly Birdge to Thuan Phuoc Bridge. City authorities may well ban vehicles from entering the area to connect the central square with the pedestrian zone, Phong said.

The city will hold a competition seeking architectural ideas for the central square project in June as well as hire domestic and foreign consulting units to soon commence the project.

Da Nang, home to beautiful My Khe Beach and neighbor to popular ancient town Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, is famous for its long, sandy beaches.

The central city, which has won global attention for its annual international fireworks competitions in June-July and its spectacular Golden Bridge, has improved on transport, healthcare, commercial, and service infrastructure in recent years to cope with the surge of tourists.
