Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur to Singapore's Changi, the world's busiest international airline route last year, has lost its crown to Hong Kong-Taipei route this year, according to data by flight statistics firm OAG.

The Hong Kong-Taipei route recorded 6.8 million seats this year, a 48% year-on-year increase, though still 15% below 2019 levels.

Kuala Lumpur-Changi dropped to fourth place with 5.4 million seats, following Cairo-Jeddah in second place and Seoul Incheon-Tokyo Narita in third.

"With the Asia-Pacific region nearing full recovery, the busiest routes are concentrated around major hubs like Hong Kong, Seoul, Incheon, and Singapore. However, the composition of supply on these routes is shifting as low-cost carriers grow at a faster pace than legacy airlines," said OAG chief analyst John Grant.

The report also highlighted the strong growth of Asia-Pacific routes, which continue to recover from the pandemic.

Of the top 10 busiest international routes in 2024, seven are based in Asia, with one each from Africa, Europe/North America, and the Middle East.
