Hong Kong's beloved congee restaurant chain shuts down after 33 years

The decision was attributed to "deteriorating business conditions and financial difficulties," according to an announcement reported by the South China Morning Post.

All employees were immediately terminated, according to China Daily Asia.

Staff members were informed that they could file claims for unpaid wages, severance pay, and other entitlements, with further details to be provided later. They were also advised to consult the Labor Department regarding their claims and legal rights.

Founded in 1992, Ocean Empire prided itself as Hong Kong's first congee chain, once boasting more than 30 outlets at its peak.

Famous for its Cantonese congee, fried dough sticks, and steamed rice rolls, the restaurant was a staple for traditional breakfasts. However, by the end of April 2025, the chain had reduced to just seven locations in Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Kwun Tong, Mei Foo, and Fanling.
