Authorities in Indonesia's Bali have deported 76 foreigners so far this year for visa-related violations, nearly half of last year's number of 194, an official said.

Anggiat Napitupulu, head of the Bali Law and Human Rights Agency, said the foreigners had been deported for various violations of immigration law from the beginning of January to March 25.

"Most overstayed their visas. Some others misused the visa for work and committed crimes," he told the Jakarta Post.

Famous for its stunning beaches and ancient temples, Bali has become a top tourist destination in recent years thanks to its generous visa policy.

However, the island has been stepping up law enforcement regarding foreigners following a recent string of public order violations.

The Indonesian government is seeking to impose entry fees and to limit the number of foreign tourists in Bali to restore its tourism image.
