An American tourist was found dead at a depth of 21 meters in the waters off Gili Trawangan Island, one of Indonesia's famous tourist hotspots, police said on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old tourist went missing on Sunday while diving in the area off the northwest coast of Lombok, around 35 kilometers to the west of Bali, Indonesian news portal Tempo reported.

On Monday, the victim's body was discovered by divers from the Dream Dive Center who handed his body over to the medical team. The victim was found with complete diving equipment still attached to his body.

The medical team then brought the victim's body to the Bhayangkara Hospital.

According to the guide from the Dream Dive Center who dived with the victim, they went diving on Sunday at Shark Point to the north of Gili Trawangan.

The tourist was separated from the group at a depth of approximately 15 meters while the guide was accompanying other divers to see the coral reefs.

The tourist was said to have been trying to move towards the surface of the water, but he soon was out of sight due to the limited visibility in the area.
