Footage shared on Weibo shows the incident on Dec. 6, with two people stepping aside as the car begins a self-parking maneuver. The car slowly reverses, turns toward the pond and continues moving forward until its front end dips into the water. The vehicle only stops once its nose touches the surface, as the two rush back but are unable to prevent the mishap.

Online users criticized the owner for taking an unnecessary risk by leaving the car beside open water and relying on self-parking, while others questioned who would be responsible if the battery were damaged, Chinese outlet 163.com reported.

On Nov. 26, Xiaomi released an over-the-air update, HyperOS 1.11.0, for all Xiaomi car users. The update introduced enhancements to the parking system, including parking assistance, remote parking, and parking-spot search features.

Despite these improvements, some commentators argued that the automatic system should not be blamed, noting that drivers remain primarily responsible when using intelligent assistance features. The terrain at the site, they added, was also unusual. The SU7 may have detected what it interpreted as an open space, but the water surface could have been misread as an empty area.

In October, another Xiaomi self-parking case drew attention when a light blue SU7 began moving on its own while parked. Upon inspection, Xiaomi engineers said the vehicle had received a valid remote parking command from the owner’s phone and that all systems were functioning correctly.
