A video showing humanoid robot Figure 02 folding clothes and placing them into a washing machine has gone viral on X.

In a video shared Wednesday by Brett Adcock, founder and CEO of California-based AI robotics company Figure, the robot is shown taking the clothes from a basket and placing them inside the washing machine with speed and precision, US magazine Digital Trends finds.

It cannot fully operate the machine yet, but this is considered significant progress in automation.

In February Figure introduced Helix, its vision-language-action model that combines perception, language and human understanding.

As the robot’s brain, Helix enables advanced upper-body manipulation control and allows two robots to work together simultaneously.

Figure 02 is not the first humanoid robot being developed for manual tasks. According to Digital Trends, 1X Technologies is working on the Neo Gamma robot. Designed primarily for domestic use, it features similar abilities such as object manipulation and human-like movement.

Boston Dynamics, a major player in the robotics field, created Atlas for industrial purposes, a category in which Figure 02 also fits.

1X Technologies has partnered with BMW, sending Figure 02 to the automaker’s South Carolina facility for a trial run. The robot also made headlines in June for sorting plastic bags on a conveyor belt.

Adcock and his team have already released a teaser for their next model, Figure 03, Interesting Engineering says.

The company hints it will improve Figure 02’s mobility, AI and ability to handle complex tasks, and says it may also be more suitable for specialized tasks such as assisting in the medical field or operating in hazardous environments.
