Facebook Messenger suffered an outage that prevented users from sending and receiving messages on desktop browsers and intermittently so on the mobile app.

Many users in Vietnam reported failed message deliveries around 2 p.m Tuesday, with messages stuck on "sending" or displaying error notifications.

"Switching to my phone did not help as it was also slow and unstable," Thanh Linh in Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, said, adding that colleagues faced similar issues.

According to Downdetector, a platform monitoring Internet service disruptions, reports of Messenger issues surged from 2 p.m., reaching nearly 1,000 cases by 3 p.m. from a number of regions worldwide.

User JeaninTN reported sporadic access on mobile, while the desktop version remained completely inaccessible.

Attempts to connect via a mobile hotspot also failed.

By 3:10 p.m., some users in Vietnam regained access, but Downdetector continued recording new outage reports.

On Dec. 12, 2024, Meta’s services including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp were down or unstable for over four hours.

In March Meta's services were down for about an hour. A similar event occurred in 2021 when its platforms were inaccessible globally for six hours due to a "configuration error" in their system.

In 2019 Facebook's web version experienced a 24-hour connectivity loss.
