Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has launched an upgraded autonomous driving feature, offering full compensation for any damages caused by its self-parking system.

The company recently introduced the Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving feature as part of its God's Eye Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), CarsNewsChina reported.

L4 autonomy allows a vehicle to handle all driving tasks independently without human intervention, as long as specific conditions are met.

The Shenzhen-based automaker claimed its L4 parking system meets global standards, enabling cars to park autonomously in certain situations. In case of malfunctions, it takes full responsibility, covering repair costs, third-party property damage, and compensation for personal injury if the vehicle is found to be at fault in legal proceedings.

Drivers are not required to initiate insurance claims in parking-related accidents; instead, they can directly contact BYD service for assistance. "Our move reflects absolute confidence in God's Eye ADAS," BYD stated in a press release.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz is the only automaker with a similar L4 parking system, though it is limited to specific locations such as Stuttgart Airport's parking garage, according to The Verge. Other automakers, including Tesla, offer parking assist features but still require driver involvement. Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems are classified as Level 2 (L2) autonomy, meaning drivers must remain ready to take control when necessary.

Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, are investing heavily in artificial intelligence to advance autonomous driving technology. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed that the company employs 5,000 AI engineers dedicated to achieving full L4 autonomy, Fast Company reported. Competitors such as Baidu, Xiaomi, and Xpeng are pursuing similar innovations. Chuanfu predicted that BYD's God's Eye ADAS will achieve full L4 autonomy within the next two to three years.

BYD launched its God's Eye system in February 2025, offering the technology even on its most affordable models, starting at 69,800 yuan (US$9,700) for the BYD Seagull. As of July 7, 2025, the EV maker claimed that more than 1 million vehicles have been equipped with God's Eye ADAS.
