The master plan for the project linking HCMC's former Can Gio District and Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province (which has been merged with the city) under a public-private partnership in the form of a build-transfer contract, was approved by the city Party Executive Committee last month.

It will be developed by conglomerate Vingroup at an estimated VND104.4 trillion (US$4.2 billion). Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and take three years.

The entire route will extend over 14 km between Bien Dong 2 Street in the Can Gio sea reclamation urban area and the planned Mai Sao - Ben Dinh road in Vung Tau at the intersection with 30/4 Street.

It will have nearly eight kilometers over the sea in the form of a 22.5-m-wide bridge with four motor vehicle and two mixed-use lanes with a median strip and guardrails.

At navigation channels, the bridge will have higher clearance created by a steel arch span to enable ships to pass beneath and also create an architectural landmark.

The subsea tunnel will be 3.1 km long, more than twice the length of the Thu Thiem Tunnel beneath the Saigon River in HCMC. Of this, 2.1 km will be an immersed segment beneath the seabed.

The tunnel will be built under the main shipping channel and be flanked by artificial islands to support construction and later accommodate auxiliary facilities.
