Traffic situation
The accident occurred on Wednesday at an intersection in Tien Luc Commune, Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, when a student on an electric bicycle suddenly entered the opposite lane to make a shortcut turn as the light turned red, causing a woman riding straight to fall.
The woman braked sharply to avoid the student, but her motorbike slipped, causing her to fall onto the road. The student then collided with her, leaving the woman lying motionless while the student stood up shortly afterward. Her condition has not yet been confirmed.
Traffic regulations
Vietnam’s traffic laws require drivers approaching an intersection to slow down and stop before the stop line when the traffic light turns red. Crossing into the opposite lane to make shortcut turns is prohibited because it endangers vehicles traveling legally.
Motorbike riders who run a red light and cause an accident face fines ranging from VND10 million (US$379) to VND14 million, a deduction of 10 driving license points, and possible criminal charges depending on the severity of the consequences.
In Vietnam, drivers start with 12 points on their license. If they lose all 12 points, they are prohibited from operating a vehicle and must wait at least six months before retaking a traffic safety and legal knowledge test to regain their points.
