Does prolonged use of earphones without cleaning harm the ears?

“My son often wears earphones all day, and I wonder whether wearing unclean earphones could harm the ears and what kinds of illnesses it may cause,” said VnExpress reader Hoang Nam, 37, from Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Dr. Tran Xuan Nguyen from the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at Tam Anh General Clinic in District 7, HCMC, earphones that are used frequently without proper cleaning can accumulate sweat, dead skin cells, and dust, turning into a breeding ground for bacteria.

When placed in the ear, the warm, humid, and enclosed environment allows bacteria and fungi to thrive, which may lead to infections, ear fungus, or skin irritation. Earphones, especially in-ear types, come into direct contact with the skin of the ear canal and, if not cleaned properly, can block pores and cause pimples or irritation. Sharing unclean earphones can also transmit bacteria and fungi between users.

Nguyen advised cleaning earphones daily or before each use, especially after workouts or outdoor activities. To clean them, dab a small amount of medical alcohol on a tissue or soft cloth and gently wipe the surface. He warned against using wet wipes or harsh cleaning agents, as these may irritate the ear canal or damage the device.

Earphones should be stored in a dry case or pouch, away from damp environments or personal items that may spread bacteria, he said. Avoid using sharp objects such as tweezers to remove debris, and instead use a soft brush or cotton swab. For in-ear models, remove and clean the silicone tips, then air dry them before reattaching.

Nguyen also recommended limiting listening time by taking 5–10 minute breaks after every hour of use and avoiding sharing earphones with others.
