Vietnam wushu star wins World Games gold

Vi led the taolu event in both long weapon and short weapon category with a total score of 19.040, which is 0.7 more than second placed Winnie Cai of Canada, and South Korea's Hee Ju Seo who finished third on 18.320 points.

This is the second gold medal for Vietnamese wushu in the history of World Games, after Nguyen Thanh Tung clinched a tai chi gold in 2013. In that year, Vi won a silver medal.

Vietnam compete in four sports in 2022 World Games - billiards, muay Thai, wushu and women's beach handball.

Vietnam has two other wushu athletes at the tournament, Hoang Thi Phuong Giang and Pham Quoc Khanh. On Tuesday night, Khanh finished the men's event in fourth place with 18,947 points, not enough to win a medal. Giang will compete on Wednesday night.

This year's event takes place from July 7 to 17 in Birmingham, Alabama, the U.S., having been delayed one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It features 30 sports in 54 disciplines. Athletes from 110 nations will participate in this competition.

World Games is an international multi-sport event that includes sports not contested in the Olympics. The event is hosted every four years, usually one year after the Summer Olympics.
