Pham Quang Huy brought Vietnam its first gold medal at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China after topping the men's 10 m air pistol event on Thursday.

Huy competed with seven athletes in the final. He scored 240.5 points, bested Lee Won-ho - the world's second-ranked shooter in the men's 10m air pistol event and Svechnikov Vladimir of Uzbekistan who got 219.9 points.

In the first five shots, Huy scored 49.1 points, which was less than Johnathan Wong Guanjie (Malaysia, 50 points), Sarabjot Singh (India, 49.7 points), Svechnikov Vladimir (Uzbekistan, 49.5 points) and equal to Zhang Bowen (China, 49.1 points).

However, he came out on top in the second round of the final, when each shooter got two shots in each turn and the lowest scorer was eliminated until there were only two shooters competing for the gold medal.

In his fifth shot, Huy scored 9.9 points, while Lee Won-ho scored 10.3 points. The Vietnamese shooter took the lead when he scored 9.7 in his sixth shot, while Lee only got 8.9.

Huy then stayed consistent and maintained a score above 9.8 in each shot. When there were only two shooters left competing for the gold medal, Huy scored 10.4 and 9.9, while Lee scored 10.1 and 9.0.

Huy's gold medal is also Vietnam's first shooting gold at Asian Games after 41 years.

With the first gold, Vietnam jumped eight places from 22nd to 14th in the medal table with one gold, one silver and 10 bronze medals, right behind Malaysia.

At the 2018 Asian Games, it also took Vietnam until the fifth day to win a gold medal. The tournament was Vietnam's most successful Asian Games to date with five gold medals. This year, Vietnam aims to get 2-5 gold medals.
