Chinese track and field athlete Wu Yanni expressed dissatisfaction with her performance despite successfully defending her 100m hurdles title at the National Athletics Championships on Aug. 4.

Wu secured first place with a time of 13.15 seconds. Her main competitor, Liu Jingyang, fell at the fifth hurdle, while Chen Yinfeng and Lin Yuwei finished second and third, respectively.

The victory came days after Wu's 28th birthday, making it appear a timely celebration. However, Wu was not content with her performance.

"Taking first place is not something worth celebrating," she said after the race. "Winning with a time of 13.15 seconds, I cannot be happy with that. I think my performance today was too poor. Please give me more time."

The following day, Wu shared a personal message on social media, pledging to improve in upcoming competitions. "This is my sixth national championship, but I am very unhappy with the result. Please give me more time, I will come back."

Wu Yanni shared photos and a statement about her 100m hurdles race at China's National Athletics Championships on Aug. 4, 2025, on her social media account.

Wu has won the women's 100m hurdles at the Chinese national championships in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

She set the Asian record in 2020 with a time of 13.09 seconds, then improved it to 12.87 seconds in 2021, before achieving her personal best of 12.74 seconds last year.

Wu has yet to meet the direct qualification standard of 12.73 seconds for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, scheduled in Tokyo this September. However, she remains eligible for entry based on world rankings, currently placed 30th globally and second in Asia, behind Japan's Yumi Tanaka.

Wu Yanni competes in the women's 100m hurdles event at China's National Athletics Championships, Aug. 4, 2025.

Born in Zigong, Sichuan, Wu gained recognition for both her athletic achievements and charismatic personality, including attention for her tattoos, which she says represent confidence.

She won the national championship in 2023 and reached the Asian Championships final in Bangkok the same year but was disqualified for a false start. In 2024, she qualified for her first Olympics in Paris, though she rated her own performance poorly, saying she "couldn't compete" with her opponents in the 100m hurdles.
