At 1 a.m. on Nov. 24, veteran Vietnamese runner Nguyen Van Lai will face off against Edwin Kiptoo, a Kenyan marathon star, in a rematch for the championship at the VnExpress Marathon Hanoi Midnight 2024 - Hyundai Thanh Cong Cup.

The head-to-head showdown has garnered attention as it marks the first rematch between the two elite runners in the VnExpress Marathon (VM) system.

Their previous battle at April’s VM Hue kept spectators on edge. Kiptoo, with his powerful physique and long strides, led most of the race. However, in a dramatic turn during the final 200 meters, Lai surged forward, nearly overtaking his opponent, and finishing just two seconds behind Kiptoo.

Kiptoo’s winning time at VM Hue was 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 43 seconds, while Lai followed closely with 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 45 seconds.

For Kiptoo, VM Hue was his debut in the VnExpress Marathon system. Since then, he has claimed victories at the VM Quy Nhon and Da Nang Midnight Marathons, making him the most successful runner in 2024. The Hanoi Midnight Marathon marks Lai’s return after VM Hue, with a determination to reclaim his title.

Lai, the defending champion of the Hanoi Midnight Marathon, holds the course record of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 3 seconds. This weekend, the 37-year-old aims not only to defend his title but also to break the elusive sub-2:25 barrier on a course and under weather conditions similar to last year.

The night course presents minimal challenges, with Vinh Tuy Bridge (kilometer 6) and Long Bien Bridge (kilometers 16-18) being the only significant inclines. Otherwise, the flat route and cool temperatures, forecasted to be below 20 degrees Celsius, are ideal for high-speed races.

Kiptoo enters the Hanoi Midnight Marathon as a formidable contender. The Kenyan runner’s consistent performances in 2024 include a personal best of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 15 seconds, achieved earlier this month. With multiple victories under his belt, Kiptoo is expected to bring his trademark endurance and strategy to this critical rematch.

This face-off is expected to be fierce and unpredictable, where even the smallest mistake could decide the winner. Beyond Lai and Kiptoo, the race will feature other elite runners, including Huynh Anh Khoi, champion of VM Ha Long 2024, and Dang Anh Quyet, winner of VM Ho Chi Minh City Midnight Marathon.

The VnExpress Marathon Hanoi Midnight 2024 marks its third consecutive year, offering runners the rare opportunity to experience Hanoi’s serene autumn and early winter ambiance under the moonlight. Whether competing for the podium or enjoying the scenic journey, participants are set for an unforgettable run through Vietnam’s thousand-year-old capital.

To ensure optimal hydration, organizers will provide 20 water stations along the course, spaced 1.5–2 km apart—denser than the international standard of 2–3 km.
