Son received an average score of 8.46, while the second-highest-rated player in the ASEAN Cup this year is Thailand's Suphanat Mueanta with 7.59.
However, Mueanta was in the best XI, while Son, who scored seven goals and provided two assists, did not. The Brazilian-born striker also won MVP and top scorer awards of the tournament.
Sofascore’s criteria for selecting the typical lineup only considers players who played at least 60% of their team's total minutes. Son played 394 minutes across five matches, accounting for just 55% of Vietnam's total minutes. His absence was due to missing the first three group-stage matches because of naturalization rules and being forced off with a severe injury during the second leg of the final against Thailand.

If Son had not been injured and played the entire second leg, he would have met Sofascore's criteria and got selected.
Despite winning the title, only three Vietnamese players were included in Sofascore's lineup: Nguyen Hoang Duc (7.13 points), who played 89% of Vietnam's minutes; Bui Tien Dung (7.06 points), playing 81% of the team's minutes; and Pham Xuan Manh (7.15 points), who covered 74% of Vietnam's total playing time.
Other high-performing Vietnamese players, such as Nguyen Quang Hai (7.24 points, 57% of minutes), Bui Vi Hao (7.48 points, 52%), and Nguyen Tien Linh (7.34 points, 47%), were excluded due to insufficient playing time, as coach Kim Sang-sik constantly rotated the squad throughout the tournament.
Thailand, the tournament runners-up, had five players in the best XI: Patrik Gustavsson (7.18 points), Suphanat Mueanta (7.59 points), Weerathep Pomphan (7.16 points), Nicholas Mickelson (7.00 points) and Pansa Hemviboon (6.97 points). Notably, Pomphan received a red card in the final and Pansa scored an own goal during the second leg of the final.
Sofascore is the world's leading statistics company, founded in 2010 and has tens of millions of users. This is the only major statistical agency that has publicly rated the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
Their best XI is based entirely on player statistics rather than subjective criteria. The selection process uses metrics such as minutes played, goals, assists, defensive actions and passing accuracy. For example, goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud of Singapore (7.27 points) was included over Vietnam’s Nguyen Dinh Trieu (7.02 points), despite Trieu was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
The ASEAN Cup organizers are conducting an online poll for fans to select their best XI. This lineup is expected to be announced after Jan. 12.
