Despite Vietnam losing to UAE, assistant coach Lu Dinh Tuan and the coaching team are happy with their fighting spirit.

"Congratulations to UAE. They played really well in this game, much better than the previous games," Tuan said in the post-match press conference on Tuesday.

"Vietnam didn't start the game well, perhaps it’s because of stamina problems. In the second half, we made some adjustments to the squad. The players have put up a good fight and scored two goals. I’m really satisfied with their fighting spirit in this match."

Before the game, Vietnam were leading group G with 17 points, two more than UAE. The Golden Dragons only needed a draw to secure the top spot. However, UAE showed dominance and led 3-0 after 50 minutes.

But Vietnam didn't give up. In the last six minutes, Nguyen Tien Linh and Tran Minh Vuong scored to make it 2-3, which is also the final result.

"When some players were out of stamina, we made some substitution to improve on pace and offense. And we succeeded," Tuan added.

With the loss against UAE, Vietnam were dropped to second in group G. But they still advanced to the final round of World Cup qualifiers as one of the five best second-placed teams.

"We are really proud because Vietnam have never made it in the third round of World Cup qualifiers before. This achievement is also an immense encouragement for Vietnamese people in the Covid-19 fight. This is truly the pride of the nation," Tuan said.
