Nguyen Hai Huy has agreed to pay HCMC FC the VND1-billion ($44,000) compensation they demanded for breaking a pre-contract.

The midfielder said Friday: "Everything has been settled. I have apologized to HCMC FC and compensated them. I chose Hai Phong FC so I can stay close to my family."

After Huy's former club Than Quang Ninh closed down due to financial problems, HCMC made him an offer and paid him $30,900 in advance, but no official contract was signed.

Hai Phong approached Huy later and he changed his mind.

HCMC wanted Huy to return the money and pay $44,000 in compensation. He asked them to halve the compensation money but the club refused.

To avoid legal problems and suspension, he acceded to HCMC’s demand, and will join Hai Phong on a two-year deal.

Huy spent his entire career with Quang Ninh and was considered one of the best attacking midfielders in the V. League in recent years.

National team captain and center back Que Ngoc Hai also had an agreement with HCMC, and also changed his mind to go to his hometown club, Song Lam Nghe An. But unlike Huy, he was not forced to pay compensation.
