According to Times of India, more than 291 applications were sent to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the head coach position of India's national team.
Among them, more than 100 coaches have UEFA Pro certificates in Europe, 20 have AFC Pro certificates from the Asian Football Confederation and several coaches are from South America. Two former Vietnam national head coaches Park Hang-seo and Philippe Troussier are also on the list.
Coach Park, with his success with Vietnamese football, made it to the shortlist of three candidates.
However, AIFF decided to choose Spanish coach Manolo Marquez.
Marquez, 55, played for a number of small clubs in Spain before becoming a coach in 2002. He has been working in India since 2020, winning a national championship with Hyderabad FC.
He is coaching FC Goa and still has a contract with this team until May 31, 2025. He will continue to work at Goa until the end of the 2024-2025 season and then fully devote himself to the India national team.
Vietnam are expected to be the first opponent of Marquez and the India national team at a international friendly tournament in October 2024.
