Eight out of 12 Vietnamese players made it past the round of 16 in FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth on Thursday night.

Dau Khuong Duy, Nguyen Quang Minh, Le Thai Hoang Anh, Dinh Nho Kiet, An Dinh Minh, Nguyen Linh Dan, Nguyen Hong Nhung and Vu Bui Thi Thanh Van managed to reach the quarterfinals.

These players all garnered excellent wins against opponents with higher Elo ratings. Of which, the most impressive victory came from Dan, who defeated second seed Alua Nurmanova of Kazakhstan. With an Elo of 2,221, Nurmanova is 808 points above Dan.

In the quarterfinals, Minh and Duy will go head to head, which will guarantee at least one Vietnamese in the semifinals.

The duration for each game is 15 minutes, plus a 10-second increment per move.

The top three finishers in each category will qualify for FIDE Online Rapid Super Final 2021, which has a prize pool of $30,000.
