My house is near An Dong market, District 5, HCMC. I work on Nguyen Hue Street, District 1, about 4 km from my house. After always riding a motorbike to work before, I decided to start jogging there instead, about three years ago.
I bought a waterproof backpack, light enough to hold a laptop, work clothes, an afternoon running suit, and a lunch box. In the morning, I change into running clothes, then warm up carefully, put on the backpack, and start running. Sometimes I have to walk and sometimes I have to hit the road, but I make sure I am close to the sidewalk. I arrive at work in about 40-45 minutes.
Then I take a shower in the company's toilet, change clothes, change shoes (work shoes are available at the company), have breakfast and start the working day.
In the evening, I change back into running clothes and start the return journey. I run regularly, rain or shine, and feel really happy about it.
I only take the bus or ride the motorbike when I need to meet partners outside the company, or I call a ride-hailing vehicle for convenience.
Running with a backpack of about 4-5 kg every day has turned me into a completely different person: agile, supple, clean, neat, comfortable in spirit, and always awake at work. My health indicators are all very good.
When I jog, it is only slightly longer than the time it takes to ride a motorbike as I do not get stuck in traffic. I leave home early and I always get to work on time. Besides this, I get to save money on gasoline, and VND10,000 on parking every day.
If it can be arranged, I think with a distance of 4 km, everyone should prioritize walking and jogging. I have also started cycling more often these days.
I've been a supporter of motorcycle restrictions for a long time. I've used and repaired my 50 cc Honda Super Cub for nearly a dozen life cycles and still haven't seen any motorcycle restrictions applied. Every year, I look around and see my relatives and friends buying new motorbikes.
I still use my motorbike when needed. But I make the most use of public transport and walking, contributing to reducing motorbike load, reducing pollution, and improving my health.
Personally, I support the gradual restriction of motorbikes, the application of vehicle emission registration levels, and the increase of police patrols so that they can actively control the situation of urban traffic.
I hope everyone has the conditions to reduce their dependence on motorbikes and see how their life changes.
