I am a 39-year-old single mother with a 14-year-old daughter. After my divorce, I brought my daughter with me abroad.

My daughter showed signs that she might get overweight, but she was always happy and enthusiastic with activities in the community. However, this last month she's been depressed. She goes straight to her room after classes and stays there, not making contact with anyone. When she's hungry, she waits until I leave the kitchen to come out and eat before returning back into her room.

I contacted her best friend and learned that she had a crush on a boy in class. My daughter hasn't told me anything about it yet, but her friend said that my daughter had been body-shamed. The boy she liked had apparently told her she was too fat for her height. I've tried many ways to speak to my daughter, but she never responds. If she needs something, she texts me about it. I asked her best friend to console her, but nothing seems to work.

I love her, but I am truly desperate and worried for her health because now I cannot communicate with her. I need advice from parents whose children have been body-shamed before.
