Authorities in Thua Thien-Hue Province, home to Hue Town, opened its night street zone around the iconic Imperial Citadel Friday night to boost nighttime travel experience.

The zone spanning August 23, Dang Thai Than, Le Huan and Doan Thi Diem streets was first planned in January but then delayed due to the complicated Covid pandemic.

It would be open to tourists every Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring the changing of the guard ceremony in front of the Imperial Citadel, a traditional ritual under the Nguyen Dynasty, food stalls, folk games and art performances.

This would be the third pedestrian zone in Hue after Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street along the Huong (Perfume) River and the backpacker precinct at the intersection of Vo Thi Sau, Chu Van An, and Pham Ngu Lao streets.

Hue was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 until the end of feudalism in Vietnam in 1945. The UNESCO-recognized Imperial Citadel is now a popular attraction.

The town is generally considered sleepy with little nightlife to speak of and just a few bars and cafes.
