A massive fire broke out at Pattaya Floating Market in Thailand's Chonburi province on Thursday evening, with initial damage estimated at 50 million baht (US$1.4 million).

At 8 p.m. 27 fire trucks from Pattaya city and nearby areas with more than 200 firefighters, were dispatched to the scene, Vietnam News Agency reported.

After two hours, the fire was brought under control.

Bangkok Post cited Bang Lamung district chief Pisit Sirisawatnukul as saying on Friday that the fire caused an estimated 50 million to 60 million baht in damage.

The fire is believed to have started at a wooden restroom building of the three-hectare market. Due to strong winds, the fire spread quickly and destroyed most of the shops, mainly made of wood and combustible materials, reports said.

Established in 2008, the floating market is a riverside attraction in Pattaya displaying and showcasing the Thai riverside community and authentic ways of life, including culture and local products from across Thailand.
