My aunt was criticized as frugal, but saving for 5 houses in Hanoi made her happy

Some people find joy in buying new clothes, traveling, or eating out at fancy restaurants. But my aunt feels happy when she sees her savings grow.

When it comes to the question "save money or enjoy life," everyone thinks differently. We cannot judge others by our own standards. Take my aunt, for example. She has not bought new clothes in years, eats modestly, never travels, and does not go shopping for fun.

While many people spend half of what they earn on travel, shopping, or eating out, my aunt and uncle save every bit they can, no matter how little. That is how they ended up owning five houses in Hanoi. They gave one to each child, live in one, and rent out the rest.

My aunt often tells me, "People feel happy when they get new clothes, travel, eat at nice places, or post on social media. I only feel happy when my savings grow. I feel good knowing I can take care of myself. I am glad my children do not need to worry about buying homes, cars, or paying bank loans. I feel happy knowing I do not rely on my children and can support them if they need help."

She said further: "My friend travels all the time and eats fancy meals, but their whole family lives in a cramped house. Their kids still have not paid off a mortgage. What is so great about that?"

To her, that is real hardship. No one eats out or travels every day. The fun part of spending money ends quickly. But saving it and getting a home brings lasting peace of mind.

I get where she is coming from. You do not need to spend money, shop, or travel to feel happy. For many, saving their whole life to leave each child a house or savings account brings true joy. Owning something for yourself and giving your kids a strong start is what really matters.

Of course, some might worry about health issues in old age. But unless they live in extreme poverty or push themselves too hard, people like my aunt and uncle may not face major problems. Cooking and eating at home often leads to better health than eating out. A simple meal of boiled vegetables and braised fish beats fancy hotel food full of spices and additives any day.

Some people think those who save and spend carefully will still get sick when they grow old and end up spending all their money on hospital bills. But that is not always true. If you live simply and take care of yourself, your health can be better than people who eat out often. After all, plenty of rich people with housekeepers and teams of doctors still get sick regardless.
