It's offensive to dismiss non-native English teachers

Some readers believe that non-native English speaking teachers are often more qualified and dedicated than their native-speaking counterparts, challenge the notion that native speakers are inherently better instructors.

The comments were responding to a personal statement shared on VnExpress that "Non-native English speakers have no business teaching English."

"I work with several NNS teachers, and they are highly-qualified, dedicated and professional teachers. Much better than some of the NS teachers I work with. Yes, teachers need qualifications, and I agree that not everyone should be allowed to teach English, especially if they can barely speak the language. But to say that 'non-native English speakers have no business teaching English' is limiting, short-sighted and, frankly, offensive to those who have worked hard to become capable of doing the job."

"You dont have to be a native to speak and teach good English. On the contrary, some natives ( I think from countryside) dont know much and speak in strange accent."

"It's not because you are native that you are a good teacher. To teach and to be native is different. Some people who are not native studied English and know the grammar even better. And in terms of pronunciation Australia, New Zealand, England America and all this countries are all so different so pronunciation is not an issue. I can speak several languages and I can tell you one thing is first is capability to listening, after it is talk , and in the same time it's acquiring a lot of vocabulary. And the last thing is to do not be afraid to make mistake when you talk and that is how you will improve."

"It is important to recognize that many non-native English teachers excel not only in teaching but also in providing a level of care that reflects their cultural upbringing. In many Asian cultures, teachers are revered for their nurturing approach, which often translates into a deep commitment to student welfare. This caring attitude is one reason why many parents prefer non-native English teachers, as they observe the dedication and personalized attention their children receive. This preference underscores the value of diverse teaching experiences and the broad spectrum of effective teaching methods available, regardless of a teacher's native language. This is my own point of view as a non-native English teacher from the Philippines."

"I speak eight languages, and English was number three, and none of my teachers were from the U.K. or " native" speakers. To think you're qualified because of your passport must be a U.S. idea, as most race and woke ideas are in 2024, and we've all seen how that works out when you ignore merit and skills and favor skin tones and race. No thanks, give me the best teacher any day."
