Three crew members of a double-decker yacht in the Saigon River that caught fire Thursday evening were saved in time.

The vessel had dropped off 10 passengers at Ben Suc Bridge between Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong Province, and the captain, Nguyen Van Nhat, 32, and his crew were turning around when the engine caught fire.

Their efforts to put it out failed and the fire spread.

A boat rescued the three men just before the fire completely destroyed the yacht and sank it.

On Friday the burned vessel was salvaged by the HCMC waterway traffic police.

Police said the captain has a valid pilot’s license.

A problem with the engine caused the fire, they said.

A new version of the yacht would cost VND6 billion ($242,000).
