Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the U.S.-ASEAN summit in Washington D.C. scheduled for this March, the foreign ministry says.

"Prime Minister Chinh is expected to attend the summit and engage in bilateral activities in the U.S.," foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said Thursday at a press conference.

She was responding after being asked if Chinh would also make a bilateral visit to the U.S. and what issues would it bring to the summit scheduled for March 28-29.

Hang said U.S. President Joe Biden has sent invitations to the Vietnamese prime minister and leaders of other ASEAN members to attend the ASEAN - U.S. special summit.

ASEAN has agreed with the suggestion of organizing the summit and are discussing relevant issues as well as the event's timing, Hang said.

The White House had announced on February 28 that President Biden would host a special summit between the U.S. and leaders of Southeast Asian leaders on March 28 and 29 in Washington, a Reuters report said.
