Vietnamese-American woman, 64, dies following plastic surgery in HCMC

The unidentified woman went to Tan Hung General Hospital in District 7 on March 27 for a full abdominal liposuction, liposuction of the thighs, and arms, and abdominal reconstruction.

Doctors also performed surgeries to graft fat to her buttocks, remove excess eyelid skin and replace breast implants.

Two days later she had signs of fatigue, shortness of breath and low blood pressure.

The hospital provided emergency resuscitation and transferred her to Military Hospital 175.

Doctors these diagnosed her with multiple organ failure, possibly due to anaphylaxis, myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots following multiple cosmetic surgeries.

The patient underwent various intensive resuscitation measures, including ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), continuous blood filtration, plasma exchange, and mechanical ventilation. But nothing worked and she passed away on May 3 after more than a month in the hospital.

Military Hospital 175 diagnosed her with cardiopulmonary arrest due to septic shock from Klebsiella pneumonia, multiple peptic ulcers in the antrum, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hemorrhage.

The patient also suffered from gastrointestinal infection, urinary tract fungal infection, septic shock, and a left chest hematoma.

Blood clots were found in several locations, including the pulmonary artery and the right renal artery.

The city Department of Health said Tuesday its inspectorate is investigating the case to verify if professional procedures had been followed and address any violations.

In March a 70-year-old Vietnamese-American woman stopped breathing after a facelift surgery at the Japan-Korea Beauty Hospital in HCMC.

Despite intensive care, including blood filtration and ECMO intervention, she passed away on March 15.

In December 2022 a 25-year-old woman died after receiving anesthesia for a liposuction surgery at the Key Beauty Center facility in HCMC.
