Vietnam reports 82 new local Covid-19 cases

Health authorities confirmed 82 new local Covid-19 cases Wednesday evening, taking the day's total to 217.

Among the 82 new cases, 61 were confirmed in Ho Chi Minh City, six in Da Nang, five in Nghe An, four in Bac Ninh, three in Long An, two in Kien Giang Province and one in Bac Giang.

Most of the new cases were of people in quarantine. Authorities are contact tracing one HCMC patient.

For the past two months, Vietnam's latest Covid wave has seen 10,657 infections recorded in 44 cities and provinces, with Kien Giang just added to the list. Two cases in the southern province are the mother and the brother of two men who had returned from Malaysia and were found infected upon finishing their seven-day self monitoring at home following 21-day centralized quarantine. The Malaysia returnees were registered as imported cases on Tuesday.

Also Wednesday, health authorities confirmed the 70th Covid-19 death in the country, the 35th in the latest wave.

Eighteen localities have gone 14 days without new cases, and eight have done so for 30 days.
