In HCMC, 834 cases were detected quarantine zones and locked down areas, and 52 are being contact traced.

In its neighbor Long An, 21 cases were detected in quarantine zones and locked down areas, seven returned from HCMC and one is being contact traced.

All the cases in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Quang Ngai, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hanoi, Binh Phuoc and Thanh Hoa are linked to confirmed coronavirus cases.

All the cases in Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Lao Cai and Binh Thuan either returned from HCMC or are otherwise associated with the southern city.

Since the new wave started hitting Vietnam in late April, community infections have been recorded in 58 of Vietnam's 63 cities and provinces.

The nation's largest city, HCMC, stands at the top in the number of cases and authorities have warned of a higher tally for the southern city in the coming days, given that they have kept detected infections with unknown sources of transmission in the community every day.

With Tuesday noon's tally, local infections in HCMC reached 16,027 cases, just after it hit the 15,000 mark in the morning.

So far, 1,447 local cases have been recorded nationwide on Tuesday.
