A man has been fined VND28 million (US$1,110) for driving on the wrong side of an expressway in Ninh Thuan Province and not having a driver's license.

A car is seen moving on the wrong direction on Cam Lam - Vinh Hao Expressway on Aug. 3, 2024 as captured by a traffic security camera.

The unidentified 49-year-old, who was tracked down and summoned by the police on Sunday, was fined VND17 million for driving in the wrong direction and VND11 million for driving without a license.

He told the police he was on his way to Dong Nai Province to visit his child and got lost after reaching a toll station and looking to make a turn.

So he decided to turn around and drive in the opposite direction to return to the toll station and find his way.

Surveillance cameras showed that when he drove almost two kilometers on the wrong side, he blocked the lane, forcing many vehicles traveling at high speed to brake.

He admitted to officers he had taken driving lessons but failed the theory test.

Cam Lam – Vinh Hao, opened in April, links HCMC with Nha Trang and runs through three central provinces: Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.

It has cut travel time to less than five hours, half the time it takes on National Highway 1.
