The amount of vehicles on HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway has already doubled its designed capacity and drivers should choose another route to avoid gridlock.

The expressway's operator, the Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering JSC (VECE), said Monday that the number of vehicles using Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay, which links HCMC with Dong Nai Province, has kept increasing ever since a new expressway entered service in April.

Running 99 km through Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces, Dau Giay – Phan Thiet links up with the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway. Together, the two expressways shorten the travel time from HCMC to Phan Thiet beach town in Binh Thuan to two hours, against six hours previously.

According to the VECE, HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay currently serves 58,000 – 62,000 vehicles per day on average and up to 70,000 – 73,000 per day during peak days, double the designed level.

Given the situation, it suggested that drivers should avoid using the expressway on the upcoming National Day holiday, which will last for four days starting Friday, to limit gridlock as much as possible.

Even before the Dau Giay – Phan Thiet Expressway was open, HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway already had the largest traffic volume among all expressways in Vietnam, with an average of 45,000-50,000 vehicles per day on normal days and 60,000 per day during holidays.

The 55-km expressway allows vehicles to run at a maximum of 120 kph, but many drivers take more than three hours to pass.
