A Da Nang City court handed a nine-month jail sentence to a local teenager for causing a motorbike collision that killed a Kyrgyzstan man last year.

Dinh Duong Chinh, 18, was found guilty of violating road traffic regulations, which included running a red light and driving without a license.

Nguyen Quoc Dai, 34, who rented the motorcycle the tourist was riding at the time of his death, was found guilty of the crime of "renting vehicles to individuals unqualified to participate in road traffic" and sentenced to one year’s re-education without detention.

In February last year the tourist, who was then 28, rented the motorcycle from Dai by furnishing a driver's license. Dai did not check if the license was valid for riding motorcycles in Vietnam before handing over the vehicle.

At noon on May 16, when that tourist was riding at the intersection of Ngo Quyen and Vuong Thua Vu Streets in Son Tra District, he collided with Chinh, who was then under 18 and died on the spot.

The investigation determined that Chinh’s refusal to heed the red light was the cause of the accident.
