A rare 40-kilogram sea turtle has been rescued by police as it was being prepped for the pot at a food stall in Soc Trang province.

The turtle had got stranded on the shore of the southern province, and the fishermen who found it were unaware that it was a rare species so they took it to the food stall to be cooked.

The rare turtle weighs about 40 kilograms

The species is on the verge of extinction and is listed in Vietnam’s Red Book of Endangered Species.

A tracking chip was attached to the animal before it was released back into the sea yesterday.
