The entirety of Cat Ba Island, home to 20,000 residents and a popular tourist destination in northern Vietnam, is suffering power outages for two days due to a 35KV power transmission linebreak.

On August 26, the transmission line, which supplies power to Cat Ba Island, was struck by a large cargo ship, causing power outages for the entire island, Hai Phong Electricity One Member Co., Ltd said.

Local authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies to investigate the case.

By 5 p.m. on Monday Aug. 28, the island will have power restored.

According to local authorities, there are currently not too many tourists compared to peak times. However, the two-day outage will greatly affect about 20,000 people on the island.

Hotels and motels will have to use generators to provide electricity for visitors during this time.

The Cat Ba archipelago, adjacent to world heritage site Ha Long Bay, has 367 islands, of which Cat Ba is the largest.

The island is surrounded by limestone karst mountains rising from turquoise waters that make it an ideal destination for cruise tours.
