Ho Chi Minh City's councilors appointed Nguyen Van Duoc its People's Committee chairman on Thursday, after his predecessor Phan Van Mai became the head of the National Assembly's Economic and Finance Commission.

Duoc, 57, was appointed by the Communist Party's Politburo to become the vice secretary of HCMC Party Committee on Wednesday while he was Party secretary of Long An Province, the city's Mekong Delta neighbor.

Duoc said his appointment as HCMC chairman, which came two days after Mai took on the new job, is not only a personal honor, but also carries heavy responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party and the people.

"I will build upon the spirit and achievements of generations, as well as my predecessor Phan Van Mai. I promise to dedicate all of my heart and my head for the people and for HCMC," he said.

Duoc, who holds a master's degree in geology, pledged to deploy several solutions to reach socio-economic targets for the 2020-2025 period, including a GRDP growth at 8.5% this year and for HCMC to grow by at least 10% in the years to come.

In the long run, Duoc said he is committed to maintaining HCMC's role as an economic engine, as well as resolving challenges and building a capable staff.

The HCMC People's Committee now consists of Duoc as chairman, along with five vice chairpeople - Duong Ngoc Hai, Vo Van Hoan, Bui Xuan Cuong, Nguyen Van Dung and Tran Thi Dieu Thuy.
