National Assembly chairman Vuong Dinh Hue proposed solutions to build a stronger ASEAN during his speech at a session of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Indonesia on Monday.

Hue emphasized that ASEAN has always stood firm and has never been in such a strong position as it is today, despite facing many challenges. ASEAN has strived to play a central role in the greater Asian region, and has been one of the key factors in creating, shaping, and creating a safe, secure, and structured environment for cooperation and regional order.

National Assembly chairman Hue pledged that Vietnam will do its best to build a strong ASEAN and AIPA, and will always be adaptable in its aim towards a stable, prosperous, steady, and sustainable ASEAN community.

He proposed a series of solutions to AIPA such as strengthening solidarity, promoting ASEAN's central role and strategic values, and enlisting the support of partners in the international community. At the same time, parties involved need to ensure the principles of independence and self-reliance while maintaining consensus within ASEAN and settling all disputes by law.

Hue said that ASEAN needs to strengthen and expand inter-regional cooperation in many areas such as technology exchange, sustainable digital transformation, and equitable energy transition. ASEAN also needs to strengthen ties with partners to narrow the development gap and effectively respond to non-traditional security challenges.

Parliaments in ASEAN countries also need to continue to improve their role in law-making, create a favorable legal corridor, and strengthen their role in monitoring governments for the successful implementation of the ASEAN community building master plan for 2025 and beyond.

He suggested AIPA continue to innovate, become an effective parliamentary cooperation channel, and continue to focus on strengthening relations with partners who are AIPA's observers. Vietnam supports the parliaments of Cuba, Turkey and Armenia in their roles as observers of AIPA.

Vietnam proposed three draft resolutions to help ASEAN exploit its advantages in science, technology and innovation for economic recovery and development, and exploit its potential to develop the agricultural, food and forestry sectors. Vietnam wishes to receive the consensus and support of the parliaments of ASEAN countries, Hue said.

Vietnam will coordinate with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to organize the ninth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Hanoi in September.
