The shrouding ceremony for late Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh began Sunday as part of a seven-day funeral that will be a silent meditation course.

The shrouding ceremony lasted around 30 minutes Sunday morning. After the ceremony ended, monks and disciples paid their respect to the Master at the Full Moon Meditation Hall of Tu Hieu Pagoda in Hue.

All participants wore masks as a Covid-19 precaution.

Before his passing, the Master had told his disciples not to build monuments for him after his death.

"If one day I die, don't build me any tomb or tower. It'll cost money, it'll cost people's land, and our people are still very poor. Cremate me. Bring my ashes to Plum Village monasteries around the world and scatter them on the roads of your walking meditation. So that every day I am still with you on our walking meditation," he said.

Abiding by his will, Tu Hieu Pagoda monks said Thich Nhat Hanh's funeral would last seven days as a silent meditation course. During this time, the pagoda asks that visitors who wish to pay respects do so in mindful silence.

After his cremation, expected to take place on January 29, his remains would rest at the Tu Hieu Pagoda and other Plum Villages of the world.

Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the world's most influential Buddhist figures, passed away at the Tu Hieu Temple in his birthplace of Hue on Saturday, aged 95.
