After ceremonial procedures, the two leaders spoke at the Government Headquarters in Hanoi and witnessed the signing of agreements between the two countries.
Anwar is expected to meet with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vo Van Thuong and Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue.
This is Anwar’s first official visit to Vietnam since he assumed the position in December 2022.
Vietnam and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1973 and became strategic partners in 2015. Malaysia is Vietnam’s second largest commercial partner in ASEAN, and the country’s ninth largest such partner globally. The two countries’ bilateral trade turnover reached over $14.68 billion in 2022, a 17.4% increase from 2021.
Malaysia is among the 10 countries and territories with the highest investment in Vietnam, with 718 active projects and a total registered capital at $13 billion. Vietnam has 21 investment projects in Malaysia, with a total registered capital of $853 million.
Around 30,000 Vietnamese are living in Malaysia.
