Ho Chi Minh City’s labor department announced Thursday that 15 businesses were ready to offer 3,200 jobs to 2,300 workers who are about to be laid off by Taiwanese shoemaker Pou Yuen.

Department deputy director Nguyen Van Lam said that Pou Yuen, a supplier of Adidas, Nike and Reebok, was planning to lay off workers due to a drop in order numbers.

Pouyuen Vietnam Company’s HR department has confirmed that it will lay off over 2,300 workers in March.

The Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center said it has confirmed that 15 businesses offering similar jobs in Binh Tan District – where the soon-to-be laid off Pouyuen employees now work – and neighboring areas, currently want to recruit over 3,200 workers.

Pou Yuen is the city’s largest employer with over 50,500 employees.

Lam said manufacturers of wood products, textiles and leather were anticipating a stabilization in the number of orders this June or July.

Late last year, over 110,000 HCMC workers were rendered jobless, or had their working hours reduced, due to a drop in orders.
