An employee of a charity free store in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Duc City found the gold while sorting through the donated clothes and made the initial report, Pham Duc Hung, chairman of the Vietnam Red Cross Society unit in Thao Dien Ward, where the store is located, said Tuesday.
Hung said the bag of clothes with the gold in it was donated by a man in his 30s around two weeks ago.
He did not leave his personal information.
Accompanying the suspected gold items was a warranty note for the three gold bars from a gold shop on Le Loi Street in District 1. It said the gold was purchased in July 2006.
The owner of the gold shop confirmed the authenticity of the warranty note and stated that the three metal pieces are genuine gold.
Currently, the value of the three gold bullion bars, weighing a total of 2.5 ounces, is over VND200 million (US$7,900), excluding the value of the two rings.
The local authorities have issued a public notice to find the rightful owner.
According to regulations, if no owner is found within a year, the authorities will verify the gold's authenticity and hand it over to whoever found it.
