Heavy downpours from early Sunday to early Monday have resulted in floods and flash floods in central provinces.

Many areas in mountainous districts of Son Ha and Tra Bong in Quang Ngai Province were flooded, with roads and bridges submerged under water by around one meter on Monday morning.

In Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri provinces, many roads, including a section of National Highway 1A, have been inundated since Monday morning, paralyzing traffic.

In Binh Thuan Province, Tran Phu Street in Ham Thuan Nam District was flooded by half a meter on Monday morning while flashfloods prevented hundreds of students in the district’s Thuan Nam Town from going to school.

So far on Monday, floodwaters have destroyed 100 hectares of dragon fruit and flooded more than 50 houses.

In Phu Yen Province, more than 1,300 students of three schools in Tuy Hoa Town were allowed to stay home due to floods.

The same situation has caused 29 out of 50 schools in Da Nang’s Hoa Vang District to keep students home.

According to the National Center for Hydro -Meteorological Forecasting, from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday, Ha Tinh received 127.4 millimeters of rain, Quang Binh 257.4 mm, Quang Tri 242.8 mm, Thua Thien Hue 509.6 mm, Da Nang 455.6 mm, Quang Nam 362.4 mm, Quang Ngai 136.8 mm, Phu Yen 209 mm, and Khanh Hoa 116.2 mm.

Heavy rains in the region have been caused by a combination of the northeast monsoon winds and a cold spell from the north, it said.

The center warns that from Monday to Tuesday, floods are likely to occur on rivers from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, with water levels rising by three to seven meters upstream and one to three meters downstream and more flash floods and landslides should be expected.
