A man in the northern province of Hai Duong was arrested for attacking a police officer with a knife after his son was fined for not wearing a helmet.

Nguyen Dang Tuan, 41, was arrested by police to be investigated for "resisting a law enforcement officer in performance of official duties," police said Monday.

Tuan's son, 18-year-old Nguyen Trung Anh, did not wear a helmet while riding a motorbike and was stopped by police. Anh failed to show the necessary traffic papers and accepted a fine.

While Nguyen Dinh Loi, a traffic police officer, was filling out the forms, Tuan came and requested him to drop the fine.

Authorities said Loi refused to heed Tuan's request, but Tuan still tried to leave with his son's motorbike, which hindered the process of filling out the punishment form. When stopped, he retrieved a 45-centimeter knife from his own bike and slashed Loi twice on the shoulder and stabbed him once in his bag's strap. The father and son then fled the scene.
