A man in central Vietnam's Khanh Hoa Province has been detained for allegedly murdering his wife and three daughters with carbon monoxide after his business failed.

Ho Xuan Hai, 52, was detained by Khanh Hoa police on Thursday to be investigated for murder.

Hai said he invested in a pig farm in Cam Lam District, but the business failed and he was unable to pay back his debts to several people. He then went online to search for ways to murder his entire family. He bought a tank of carbon monoxide, and when his wife and their three daughters were asleep on Wednesday, he opened the valve and stayed in the closed room with them.

At around 10 a.m., family members came to the house and discovered that Hai's wife and their children had already died. Hai himself was convulsing and was taken to hospital.

The police seized a tank of carbon monoxide at the scene. Forensic results revealed that all four victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The investigation is ongoing.
