Vietnamese scored an average of 6.2 last year in its tests, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has said in a new report.

Most Vietnamese got between 6.0 (22%) and 6.5 (19%), it said.

Out of the 40 countries where the test was organized last year Vietnam was in 23rd place along with South Korea and India.

Spain topped the chart with an average score of 7.1.

The average IELTS band score, ranging from 0 to 9, is calculated by evaluating all four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

In 2022 the average scores for Vietnamese test takers were 6.4 each in listening and reading, 6.0 in writing and 5.8 in speaking.

The global averages for women and men were 6.28 and 6.22.

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. All three of them do not reveal the annual number of test takers.

However, a report by the IDP said between July 2021 and June 2022, there were 1.9 million IELTS test takers around the world while the British Council said 1.6 million took the test from April 2021 to March last year.
