Nguyen Anh Son, a University of Charleston graduate, founded a construction materials company in Vietnam but soon recognized the need to enhance his management skills.

This realization drove him to pursue a Global MBA at Tsinghua University, becoming the first Vietnamese student to join the program.

After earning his bachelor's degree in 2019, Son returned to Vietnam to establish his business. Over four years, his role as an executive highlighted gaps in his management abilities and the need for essential networks to grow his company further. To address these challenges, Son identified an MBA as the next step in achieving his long-term goals.

Son spent over six months preparing for his application to Tsinghua. He refined his essays through multiple revisions and tackled the GMAT, which he took three times to meet the program's high standards. However, his management experience helped him navigate the interview round with relative ease.

During his interview, Son shared his entrepreneurial journey and vision of fostering stronger ties between Vietnam and China. His efforts were rewarded with the Entrepreneurial Star Scholarship, worth VND350 million (US$14,000).

Since beginning the program in September, Son has balanced academic pursuits with his ongoing role in his company. While a capable team manages daily operations, he continues to provide strategic direction remotely.

Looking ahead, Son hopes to bridge gaps between Vietnam and China, particularly in the import-export sector. "Currently, many businesses and individuals want to engage in trade but lack direction and professional support," he said. By combining his MBA knowledge and real-world experience, Son aims to develop optimized supply chain solutions, facilitating better access to international markets for Vietnamese businesses.

His presence in Tsinghua's Global MBA program showcases the potential of Vietnamese professionals in global academic and business environments.

Tsinghua University, one of China's leading institutions, is now accepting applications for its 2025–2027 Global MBA cohort. Nguyen Anh Son, as the program's first Vietnamese student, is eager to guide prospective candidates. Through his own experience, he offers insights into crafting compelling applications, improving essays, and preparing for interviews.
