Da Nang will build a central city square next to the Han River at a cost of over VND1 trillion ($41.16 million).

The Da Nang Consultant Technical Construction Center invited individuals and units, both inside and outside of Vietnam, to participate in a competition to design the architecture of the square and other accompanying infrastructures on Thursday.

The square, to be located in Hai Chau District’s Thach Thang Ward, will span 16.2 ha and be divided into three areas. Area A will span over 10.6 ha, bordered by Nguyen Chi Thanh, Ly Tu Trong, Quang Trung streets and the west side of the Han River.

Area B will span over 2.3 ha and be located at the Han River cruise ship dock. Area C will span over 3.1 ha and be surrounded by Tran Phu and Quang Trung streets, as well as the west side of the Han River and the Han River Bridge.

The project is expected to cost over VND1.01 trillion, including VND130 billion for relocation compensation.

The rewards for the winners of the competition values a total of VND950 million, with the first place’s prize at VND450 million. The deadline for submission is Dec. 12.

The design and planning for the square however must fit Da Nang’s general urban planning policies as approved by the prime minister on March 16, 2021. It must also ensure large public spaces for both cultural and daily activities.
